Day 16 - Madeira(Funchal), Portugal

What a beautiful island. What makes this island different from the others we've seen is that it receives water. As a result it's farming mecca for Portugal and other surrounding islands. It too was a volcanic island but has moved beyond the magma chambers. What's left are tall, fertile, lush, steep mountains.

8-3pm port, must do the tourist Hop On Hop Off bus
Yup this is a Portuguese port
Lots of tiles
We're headed to that very far away, highest point of the mountains
As far as you can see, sweet bananas. Sadly they spoil fast so they can only be exported to islands / mainland a day or two away
Since everything is built on these steep hills you'll find these magnificent engineered bridges from one peak to another
At the top of that tall mountain now, kind of busy here. Wonder why?
Ok this is pretty. We started in that haze
Whaaaa???
Um, I kinda had a panic attack feeling the ocean air flow up my leg through the metal grate
Glass bottom floor 1600' up
Absolutely nothing under us from the beach below

So glad I didn't see this break (on both sides) until I was done with the view
Because that's a loooooong way down
An example how the steep hillsides are cultivated for farming
Along with being a farming island there's a substantial fishing component
Apparently this monster tastes like eel
Tomorrow - sea day and bridge visit
